  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ cup sanding sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the shortening, granulated sugar, and egg using an electric mixer until creamy. Add boiled apple cider and blend well.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and spices. Gradually add this mixture to the wet ingredients until just combined.
  3. Chill the dough for one hour in the refrigerator.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Shape chilled dough into tablespoon-sized balls and roll in sanding sugar.
  5. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for 9-11 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Cool on a wire rack.
