Ingredients

  • 1000 grams chuck or braising steak
  • 1 cup onions, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 cm fresh ginger, chopped
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 3 cm cinnamon stick
  • 1 dried bay leaf
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro (plus more for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare all ingredients by chopping the onions, garlic, ginger, and beef into bite-sized pieces.
  2. In a pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat and sauté onions until golden brown. Add garlic and ginger; cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Transfer the sautéed mixture to the slow cooker. Add chuck steak, spices (turmeric, coriander, garam masala, cumin, red chili powder), salt, cinnamon stick, and bay leaf.
  4. Pour in beef broth and water; stir until combined.
  5. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for about 8 hours or high for about 4 hours until the beef is tender.
  6. Before serving, remove cinnamon stick and bay leaf; stir in chopped cilantro.
