Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup neutral oil (vegetable, avocado, canola)
  • 1 cup milk or water
  • 4 large eggs
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1½ tbsp cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 12 oz dark cocoa candy melts
  • White nonpareils or sprinkles for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (162°C).
  2. Combine cake mix, oil, milk, eggs, and softened butter in a bowl; mix well.
  3. Pour batter into a greased baking pan and bake according to box instructions until a toothpick comes out clean.
  4. Once baked, crumble the warm cake into a mixing bowl.
  5. Prepare the buttercream by mixing powdered sugar and cocoa powder with a splash of milk until smooth; combine with crumbled cake.
  6. Roll mixture into 1¼-inch balls; chill in the freezer for 15 minutes.
  7. Melt candy melts as per package instructions; dip lollipop sticks into melted candy before inserting them into each ball.
  8. Coat the chilled cake pops in melted candy melts and decorate immediately with sprinkles.
  9. Place the finished pops upright in a styrofoam block to dry completely.
