  • 1 1/2 cups uncooked sushi rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons toasted black sesame seeds
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons broth or fruit juice
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Optional: Nori sheets and furikake seasoning

Instructions

  1. Rinse sushi rice under running water until clear. Cook in a rice cooker or saucepan with water until done.
  2. Once cooked, mix in toasted black sesame seeds and sesame oil; cool until handleable.
  3. Shape about 1/2 cup of cooled rice into triangular forms using wet hands or an onigiri mold.
  4. Combine soy sauce, broth or fruit juice, and sugar in a bowl; stir well.
  5. Heat a skillet with oil over medium heat; grill each onigiri for 2–3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  6. Brush one side with the soy mixture; flip and cook for another 10–15 seconds before brushing the other side.
  7. Sprinkle with furikake if desired and wrap in nori strips for added flavor.
