- 1 Cup Molasses
- 1 Cup Butter Flavored Shortening
- 1 Cup Sugar
- 1 Large Egg
- 2 teaspoons Baking Soda
- 3 teaspoons Cinnamon
- 1 ½ teaspoons Ground Ginger
- 6 Cups Flour
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, mix together molasses, butter-flavored shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla until smooth.
- In another bowl, whisk together baking soda, ground cloves, cinnamon, salt, ginger, and flour. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients while stirring.
- Slowly mix in hot water until the dough is well combined but slightly sticky.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness and cut out shapes using cookie cutters.
- Place the cut cookies on ungreased baking sheets and bake for approximately 10 minutes or until edges are firm yet centers remain soft.
- Allow cookies to cool before decorating with icing made from powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla.
