- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temp
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 large apples, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup butter, melted or softened
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
- In a mixing bowl, cream together unsalted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
- Gradually add all-purpose flour until just combined, then press into the bottom of the prepared dish.
- Toss sliced apples with flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; spread over the shortbread base.
- For the crumb topping, mix remaining flour with brown sugar and melted butter; crumble over the apples.
- Bake for 45 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Cool before cutting into squares.
